what's the benefit of this? people talking about rust being 'memory safe', whatever that means, but did ls need this? does it improve the program otherwise? i'm also curious, could rust have existed in the 386 or 486 days? is it 'more abstract' than c or c++, or does it exist at the same 'level'? in the 90s, could rust have been a viable alternative to c?
